On 18 March 2018 the Temporary Work (Skilled) visa (subclass 457 visa) was replaced with a new Temporary Skilled Shortage (TSS) visa, subclass 482.

The TSS visa has similarities to the 457 visa in that it still has 3 parts being:

Standard Business Sponsorship
Nomination application
Visa application

Temporary Work Visas

There are a number of Australian temporary work visas that applicants can apply for.

Some popular short term visas are:

Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (subclass 400): do short-term, highly specialised, non-ongoing work
Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)
Training visa (subclass 407): take part in workplace-based training to enhance your skills in your current occupation
To date the most common has been the Subclass 457 visa which may be granted up to four years and is a multiple re-entry visa for the duration of the visa.

This has now been replaced by the TSS Visa.

Sponsored Permanent Visas (ENS/RSMS)

The Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186) is for skilled workers who want to work in Australia. This visa involves a two-step process, firstly, nomination by an approved Australian employer and then an application under the nominated stream. It is part of the Permanent Employer Sponsored Visa programme.

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme visa (subclass 187) is a permanent residence visa for skilled workers who want to work in regional Australia. It also allows you to work in Australia under one of three streams
the Temporary Residence Transition stream, the Direct Entry stream and
via a Labour Agreement stream.

Two streams – Employer Sponsored stream / Labour Agreement stream

This is a provisional visa. You can stay in Australia for a period of 5 years from when your visa is granted.

You can live, work and study only in a designated regional area. Designated regional areas include all of Australia except for Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
(Includes regions of Newcastle, Wollongong and the NSW Central Coast other regional areas include Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra, Sunshine Coast and Geelong)
